With RoHS and WEEE approaching fast, export to Europe can become a frustrating issue to deal with. There are still a lot of Australian and North American companies taking a relaxed attitude toward legislative requirements of EU Directives for green electronic (RoHS) products. This however, can turn their focus around pretty fast with China and Korea backing up EU Directive 2002/95/EC promising compliance and following their trend.
Major chip manufacturer have already confirmed unprecedented demand for RoHS compliant components and shifting their production more toward green parts. This means sooner EOL for Pb (non-green) components, and designs using single source part (with no alternative can be left with no choice to either abandon or re-qualify with green part. It translates to more R&D, testing and qualification for companies wanting to enter the game.
Despite general assumption of green parts being backward compatible (to be used in leaded process), most BGAs are not capable of going through such process – so if your design uses a BGA you need to act fast if Pb version is going obsolete.
With regards to certification and conformity, the process is pretty much in line with CE marking and at this point self regulatory. Though a statement of compliance may not necessarily be enough. Proper documentation, process control and proactive research must back your claim.
samec has great deal of knowledge about RoHS requirements with proven record and hands on experience of complete conversion (from a Pb to RoHS compliant product) with all necessary documentations and reports.
